Croatia vs Portugal – preview

A Portuguese side with little to play for other than pride take on a Croatian team fighting to avoid relegation. This is the theme of Tuesday's UEFA Nations League showdown at Stadion Poljud between the title holders and the 2018 World Cup runners-up as both countries look to make amends for their recent defeats.

The Vatreni were placed in a tough group with the Portuguese, the French, and the Swedish with only the group winners progressing to the finals. Despite this, not many expected the Croats to be battling relegation. However, after securing only one win from five games, this is the reality they are facing. Modric and Co. lost both home and away to Tuesday's opponents as well as the FIFA World Cup champions, with their sole victory coming at home to Sweden last month.

However, when the pair faced off again on Matchday five a few days back, Croatia lost 2-1 at the Friends Arena, handing the Scandinavians their first win. As a result, both sides are level on points with three each heading into the final day. Sweden will be facing the world champions, so they too will be in for a tough result, but with Deschamps' men already securing progression, Les Bleus might opt to rest players for the final game, which will be bad for the Croats.

As for Portugal, they enter this tie on the back of a 1-0 defeat at home to France. That game was the group decider, with the two nations being tied on 10 points each heading into the game. A second-half N'Golo Kante goal was enough to end A Seleção's hopes of retaining the title. It was a frustrating night for Cristiano and Co. as they had many opportunities to draw the game and keep the battle going until the final. Now, they visit Croatia knowing that whatever they do, they cannot beat Griezmann and Co. to the final.

Team news

Croatia: Duje Caleta-Car is suspended for the home side and will miss the final matchday. However, Dejan Lovren is expected to return. Right-back Filip Uremovic picked up an injury in the defeat to Sweden and is a doubt for this tie.

Portugal: Fernando Santos' men have little to play for and thus could rest many players in this fixture. Whether Cristiano Ronaldo will be given a breather remains unknown as he is closing in on Ali Daei's record.
