Chelsea will be seeking their first win in their 2020/2021 Champions League campaign when they travel to face Krasnodar on Wednesday, October 28th.

Preview: Krasnodar vs Chelsea

Last weekend saw Chelsea fail to score for a second consecutive match as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford. While that result meant that Frank Lampard avoided becoming the first manager to lose his first three games to the Red Devils, it still means that the Blues sit outside the top four and haven't won a match since October 3rd, when they cruised to a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Chelsea's first home game in the Champions League ended as a very frustrating scoreless stalemate against Europa League champions Sevilla. Arguably, it was the visitors who were probably happier with that result, as Chelsea recorded a miserly six attempts on goal - their worst showing since 2015.

Next up for the Blues is a trip to Russia, and the London giants have historically done well against Russian opponents, with just one loss in their last six European ties. Moreover, they've lost just one of their last 11 away fixtures, with the sole defeat happening at the hands of Bayern Munich last season.

Given the lack of experience Krasnodar have in this competition - they are making their first ever home appearance in the Champions League - Chelsea are expected to bounce back from their poor showing against Sevilla here. In addition, Russian sides traditionally have not done well in their debut home ties, with none of the prior six teams winning their opening matches to date. Although Krasnodar are ubneaten in their prior two matches against English teams, that was in the Europa League and both games were against Everton back in the 2014/2015 edtion.

They did manage to hold Rennes to a one-all draw, which means each team in this quartet have a point each. However, it will take a miracle for the Russians to get out of this quartet, let alone finish as group winners, with Rennes expected to have a say. Despite their recent downturn of form in Ligue 1, they still sit in third spot after a strong start to the domestic campaign and have the personnel to make a good push for at least a runners-up spot in this quartet; by contrast, Krasnodar sit in eighth place in the Russian Premier League and will be facing an uphill battle against history when Chelsea come to town on Wednesday.

Team news: Krasnodar vs Chelsea

Krasnodar: Viktor Claesson, Ari, Dmitrity Stotskiy and Wanderson Maciel could all be in doubt for the hosts and will have to be assessed prior to the game.

Chelsea: Veteran defender Thiago Silva will not make the trip over to Russia as he's been given a much-needed rest by Lampard. This means that Antonio Rudiger could be involved for the first time all season after he was named to the bench during the 0-0 draw against Manchester United. Shot-stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga is still out with a shoulder injury, and Marcos Alonso is banned for this game.
