Preview: Chelsea vs Aston Villa

Chelsea come into this game having lost 1-0 to West Ham over the weekend. It was the first time the Blues had lost to the Hammers since September 2002, and now Frank Lampard's side will be looking to rebound in order to avoid making it a third straight game sans a victory. Prior to the clash with West Ham, Chelsea's impressive streak in the league was snapped as they were beaten by Manchester City, and now Lampard's young troops will be looking to get back on track against an Aston Villa side who have slowly started to turn things around after a bad patch of form.

The Blues are currently in no danger of slipping out of the top four, as they still enjoy a five point gap over the chasing pack. However, with Crystal Palace picking up six points during that time, and Tottenham starting to seemingly right the wobbly ship lately, Chelsea will be very well aware that any more negative results could see these two sides overtake them in the battle for a Champions League berth.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa now are on a two game unbeaten streak after losing their last three. That includes holding Manchester United to a two-all draw over the weekend and they will certainly be hoping to cause some major problems for another big side in this midweek fixture. Still, that may be a bit easier said than done: Aston Villa have lost all but one of their last nine Premier League clashes with Chelsea, with their sole win during that frustrating run coming back in March 2014.
