Preview: Croatia vs Hungary

Despite finishing as runners up in last summer's World Cup, Croatia have not been able to do much to convince some observers that their success in Russia was not more than just a fluke. Since then, the Vatreni have struggled to replicate the same sorts of performances, floundering badly during the Nations League matches against England and Spain where they finished bottom of their group. Despite the clear talent in their ranks - with the likes of Ivan Perisic, reigning Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric, and Ivan Rakitic among them - the team has not had the strongest year so far, either.

Although Croatia lead their EURO 2020 qualifying group, they've posted mixed results in 2019, with just three wins from their last six games. They succumbed to a surprise 2-1 loss to Hungary, and were frustrated in a one-all draw against bottom-feeder Azerbaijan just a few days after cruising to a 4-0 win over Slovakia. The team have also been hit a spate of injuries, with as many as five players unavaliable for this upcoming match, and several key players, including Modric and Rakitic, haven't been having the best of seasons so far with their respective clubs.

With that in mind, Hungary, who find themselves just one point of top spot, will be looking to try to exploit the uncertainty in the Croatian camp. The visitors already beat the Vatreni earlier this year and will be seeking to a double over Zlatko Dalic's side. Still, their will be made slightly more difficult due to the absence of key midfielder Adam Nagy as a result of ban, and Croatia, despite their struggles, have had more of those issues on the road as opposed to at home. In fact, the Vatreni have only dropped points away from their home base (the 2-1 loss to Hungary and the 1-1 draw with Azerbaijan).

However, Hungary will also be coming into this game with the knowledge that Croatia did lose 2-1 to Tunisia in a friendly tie as recently as this past June on home turf.
