La Franjirroja enters this game after their successful run in the 2019 Copa América. Will Ecuador hold them back this time around?

Peru and Ecuador will add another chapter to their well documented rivalry in a friendly match set to take place in New Jersey.

Peru will enter this tour through North America on a high, following their second-place finish in the 2019 Copa América. Ricardo Gareca's men have displayed quite an impressive brand of football since the Argentine boss took over, and one more win as La Blanquirroja's boss would be a good gift for their supporters.

Ecuador makes it to this clash with controversy surrounding the senior squad, as Jorge Celico took over the team's coaching job due to Hernán Darío Gómez's resignation. "El Bolillo" was forced out of the squad due to his lack of chemistry with some of the team's leaders, including winger Renato Ibarra, who he banned from the squad due to an alleged disciplinary issue. Ecuador's recent record includes a first round exit from the 2019 Copa América.

Peru will not have either Paolo Guerrero or Jefferson Farfán around. The goalscoring duo will see Raúl Ruidiaz and Edison Flores take up the team's attack, while Christian Cueva and Yoshimar Yotún take over the captain's armband as the most experienced players called up by Ricardo Gareca.

Ecuador will use this game to give some of their best young talents a chance to play for the senior squad. The team's big guns, such as Enner Valencia, Antonio Valencia or the aforementioned Renato Ibarra have not been included in the roster that will face Peru. Instead, coach Celico gave players such as Leonardo Campana, Gonzalo Plata and Junior Somoza a chance to play for the senior squad.

Evidently, Ecuador and Perú have faced each other quite frequently. La Franjirroja and La Tricolor have played 50 games against each other, with 20 of those being won by Perú. The yellow and blue side has won 16 of those meetings, and 14 more have concluded in a draw. The last clash between Perú and Ecuador was also a friendly game, which ended with a 2-0 score for Ecuador.

This should be the last game between these teams until the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, set to begin in March 2020.
