The 2019 Emirates Cup kicks off with this clash between the Gunners and their Ligue 1 guests. Check out our match preview for more info.

What is the form of Arsenal compared to Lyon?

Arsenal's 2018/19 season ended in a heartbreaking 4-1 Europa League final defeat to Chelsea but the Gunners have been impressive during their pre-season. The north London giants have lost only once during their tour in the US, beating Colorado Rapids, Bayern Munich, and Fiorentina before losing on penalties to Real Madrid.

After ending the season with a six-game unbeaten run, Lyon have gone on two play two pre-season friendly games. Unfortunately, both matches ended in defeats for the French outfit who have recently lost captain Nebil Fekir to Real Betis and Tanguy Ndombele to Tottenham.

Arsenal vs Lyon head-to-head record

These two have faced off only twice before. Those encounters came in the home and away fixtures in the Champions League back in early 2001. The Gunners came out unbeaten against their French opposition, winning 1-0 on the road before drawing the reverse fixture 1-1 at Highbury.

Team news

As usual, Emery will have to make do without Laurent Koscielny. The Frenchman remains in dispute with the club after refusing to report for pre-season duty. The manager will also be without Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding and Emile Smith Rowe who are recovering from injuries.

Question marks linger over Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Shkodran Mustafi as they were hit with slight muscular issues. Dani Ceballos, who recently completed his loan move to the Emirates Stadium, could make his debut for the Gunners in this game.

As for the Ligue 1 outfit, they should welcome back Houssem Aouar, Lucas Tousart and Moussa Dembélé for this tie. It will be interesting to see how they cope with the loss of Fekir and Ndombele.

Key talking point: Will Ozil and Kolasinac play despite their recent scare?

It was all over the news. Ozil and Kolasinac were the targets of a carjacking attempt, as two armed thugs chased the Arsenal duo.

At one point, the Bosnian defender confronted the two knife-wielding thieves despite being unarmed, fending them off. Fortunately, the pair came out unharmed after being helped by workers at a restaurant Ozil often visits.

Security was heightened at the German's house after this incident but it's back to work for the playmaker, as both him and Kolasinac are tipped to play in the Emirates Cup. Of course, the odds of thugs attacking the pair at the Emirates Stadium are close to zero.
