Current form: Netherlands vs Japan

Sarina Wiegman's side were virtually flawless during their group stage campaign, as the Netherlands are just one of a few sides who finished not just top of their group, but with a perfect nine points out of nine. The only other teams to achieve this were hosts France, Germany, England, and reigning champions USA.

The Oranje come into this game on a six game winning streak, and certainly have put their difficult start to 2019 firmly behind them.

Japan have won just one match so far at this summer's tournament, but it was enough to earn the 2011 World Cup winners the runners-up spot in their group. However, Asako Takakura's side, who are among the youngest featuring in France, have not had the strongest showings, and will be hoping to kick things up a notch as they prepare to face a Netherlands side who will be eager for revenge after Japan ended their run at the World Cup four years ago.

The Asian side have won just two of their nine games in 2019. One of them was beating debutants Scotland 2-1 on matchday two, which was their first victory since earning a 3-1 win over Brazil in March. That being said, they do hold the superior head-to-head record over the Netherlands, although the Oranje, who are the 2017 Women's EURO winners, beat them 6-2 in their last meeting in 2018.

How they got to the round of 16: Netherlands vs Japan

The Netherlands saw off New Zealand thanks to a late, late goal to give them all three points on matchday one. After that, they began to really get into their groove, cruising to a relatively comfortable 3-1 win over Cameroon before taking on Canada in a battle for top spot on matchday three.

It wasn't easy, but the Oranje overcame the Canadians after Christine Sinclair's equalizer to earn a 2-1 result and top spot in Group E.

Japan, meanwhile, finished second behind England, and with four points, were tied with Spain for the fewest points earned by a runners-up team. They surprisingly were unable to break down a staunchly defensive Argentina, firing blanks in a dull scoreless draw. A 2-1 win over Scotland turned out to be their only success in their group, as they went on to lose 2-0 to England and certainly coach Takakura will be hoping that his young side can finally get up and running as they now enter the knockout rounds.
