Italy come into this game having lost their final group stage game to Brazil under rather controversial circumstances. The Azzurre were in contention to finish their quartet unbeaten until the South American powerhouse were gifted a rather generous penalty, which Marta easily converted to give them a life-line and passage to the round of 16. Although it didn't prevent Milena Bertolini's ladies from finishing top of their group, it means that they suffered their first regulation time loss in 2019 and now will have to quickly put that behind them as they face 1999 World Cup runners-up China. They flopped miserably at the Algarve Cup and were beaten 2-1 by France in their pre-World Cup friendly game, and goals seem to be a major problem so far for this at this summer's tournament.

The Azzurre came from behind to beat Australia 2-1 with two second half goals after the Matildas had taken an early lead. On matchday two, they easily cruised to a 5-0 win over debutants Jamaica, with Juventus-based duo Cristiana Girelli and Aurora Galli netting a hat-trick and a brace respectively. Although they will feel aggrieved in how they were denied three points against Brazil, nonetheless Italy's matchday three defeat was not enough to deny them the chance to finish top of Group C.

China, meanwhile, narrowly lost 1-0 to Germany, rebounded with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa, and held Spain to a scoreless stalemate in order to earn four points and qualify for the round of 16 as one of the better-ranked third-placed sides.
