During last Saturday’s English Premier League encounter away to Wigan Athletic, Wayne Rooney elbowed James McCarthy but managed to avoid a booking as referee Mark Clattenburg only whistled for a free-kick in favour of the Latics.

This provoked Wigan coach Roberto Martinez to launch an attack on Wayne Rooney. Speaking to The Sun after the match, the manager stated:

“I saw the incident clearly and the referee did as well because he gave the free-kick. Once you give a free-kick it is quite clear that it is a red card.

“When you look at the replay, it is quite clear he catches James McCarthy in the face with his elbow. If one of my players had done that, I would think he was very lucky to stay on the pitch.

“It is a big call in the game. It is unfortunate because the referee saw it but he didn't feel it was a red card.”

Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson, meanwhile, insisted that “there was nothing in it” which deserved a sending off. Either way, the FA decided to investigate the matter – something which raised fears for both Wayne and Manchester United who have Chelsea, Liverpool and Bolton next on their fixtures list.

In reply to Wayne Rooney’s possible match-ban issue, Fergie claimed that the press wanted Roo “hung” or “electrified” before Tuesday’s titanic Chelsea vs Manchester United match. The Telegraph quoted the Scottish manager as saying:

“You have asked the question because it is Wayne Rooney. The press will raise a campaign to get him hung by Tuesday or electrocuted or something like that.

“It is unbelievable. Watch the press. It will be interesting to see it.”

In the end, Sir Alex Ferguson would be relieved to know that Wayne Rooney has been freed from the FA of any further accusations. With referee Mark Clattenburg claiming that he was sure to have taken the appropriate decision during the incident, the Football Association were eventually left with no right to hit Wayne Rooney with the prospective three-match ban.

Fans can expect the Red Devil striker to be on the field against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
