“We are obliged to win the Lyon tie. It was a shame [not to do so in France] since we played a good match,” Real Madrid’s official website quoted Sergio Ramos as saying.

The defender then looked back at the outcome of the meeting in which Karim Benzema got the opening goal before Bafetimbi Gomis levelled the result at 1-1. He continued:

“We had a great result with ten minutes to go in the match, but it ended up with a draw. However, we can't be negative.

“We know that an away goal is very important,” Ramos concluded.

Last season, the Real Madrid defender was slammed by Lyon’s players for “lack of respect”. Sergio Ramos had actually predicted an easy 3-0 victory for Los Blancos at the Santiago Bernabeu but Olympique Lyon had other ideas as the match ended 1-1 and 2-1 on a aggregate in favour of the French side.

History reveals that Real Madrid have never got anything more or less than a draw against Lyon at the Bernabeu. But after avoiding defeat at the Stade de Gerland for the first time on February 22, Sergio Ramos and the rest of his Real Madrid mates are hoping for something better to happen in the Spanish capital this time round.

In the meantime, Los Blancos are preparing for another match in La Liga. This weekend, Real Madrid are away to Deportivo La Coruna.
