A bit more than half a decade ago, Real Madrid had to visit the Stade de Gerland in France to kick off their 2005/2006 UEFA Champions League campaign against Olympique Lyon. Both teams were paired in the same section – Group F, which also included Rosenborg from Norway and Olympiakos from Greece.
Los Blancos were under pressure to kick-off their Champions League campaign on a good note, but they emphatically failed to do so as they lost 3-0 to Lyon. John Carew, Juninho and Wiltord found the net in a space of 10 minutes in the first period to wound the Spanish giants who couldn’t reply with goals at the other end of the pitch.
Real Madrid had the opportunity to take revenge on Olympique Lyon almost exactly one year later. Coincidentally, both teams were drawn in the same UEFA Champions League group for yet another time. That season, like it had happened during the previous one, Real Madrid once again finished as runners-up behind Olympique Lyon.
A new-look Real Madrid travelled to France to face Olympique Lyon with Champions League quarter-final tickets at stake.
