Match Preview

Manchester United will aim to bounce back from last weekend's defeat when they host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. Jose Mourinho's men were dealt a massive blow in their second league game of the season falling to an unexpected 3-2 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The tension is currently mounting in the camp of the Portuguese manager with some fans fans and pundits citing that he may be shown the exit door soon should things remain as they are now. Ahead of the Monday night fixture, Jose chances of clinching a win is heavily boosted by the return of a few key players who were amiss during last weekend’s defeat.

Nemanja Matic, Antonio Valencia, and Diego Dalot could all make their respective debut this season after missing the first two games as a result of injuries suffered during the preseason. Alexis Sanchez, who was featured in the inaugural game of the season against Leicester is also available for selection after being omitted from the squad at lost at the Amex Stadium last Sunday.

With every member of the squad almost at the disposal of Mourinho, a strong outing is excepted from the Red Devils. Statistically, the upcoming test with Spurs should not be much a bother as the last win recorded by the London club at Old Trafford dates back to 2014.

The meeting at the same venue the last time out was a close one although Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera struck to ensure that Dele Alli’s opener was a mere consolation for Mauricio Pochettino’s brigade. Nonetheless, the tendency of the tide turning vividly exists with the White Lillies grabbing back-to-back wins in the new season despite failing to recruit new players during the transfer window.

Spurs' last outing which was against Fulham also saw Harry Kane break his jinx in August by contributing a goal in the 3-1 victory. Should the trend be upheld, it could be a very busy night for Manchester United whose defensive frailties were on full display against Brighton.

In terms of selection, Pochetino will have some big decisions to make. Earlier in the week goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was charged with drink-driving on Friday and will appear court on September. As to whether his manager will risk him being between the sticks for this crucial encounter remains a mystery at the moment.

Tottenham will also be without the service of South Korea's Heung-min Son who is representing his country at the ongoing Asian Games. The team will, however, welcome Victor Wanyama who returns after suffering a knee injury.
