Manchester United ostensibly have their sight on Liverpool’s Pepe Reina, as keeper Van der Sar is anticipated to hang his gloves after the end of this season.
Liverpool have already lost Fernando Torres to Premier League archrivals Chelsea, but the Reds are not concerned by the striker’s departure, as new comers Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll have already popped up as promising players. Now, the radar of rivals Manchester United have been placed on goalie Pepe Reina, and this could be an unpleasant news for the Reds.

Reina has been a regular starter for Liverpool since 2005, but surprisingly, he did not show as much loyalty as he was expected to, when he was asked about the transfer rumours currently surrounding him. According to The Sun, Reina told Spanish radio station Onda Cero:

"Yes, well, Van der Sar will hang up his gloves in the summer so... of course, they are looking. I can't do anything, and I can't say anything logically, as I have a contract with Liverpool.”

It seems the Reds’ incapability to win trophies has had a major impact on the players’ relationship with the club. Perhaps, Reina could also soon follow the footsteps of his Spanish country-mate Fernando Torres, and place his personal desires above his respect for Liverpool and their fans.

"Of course one likes to fight for titles and be in a team that does that,” Reina added. “We always fought to be in the Champions League and try to win the title, but unfortunately, it hasn't been the case in the last couple of years.

“I won't lie. I want to play in the Champions League and challenge for titles.”

This somehow shows how rapidly Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish needs to restore the club. Any additional setbacks this season might let him lose a good number of his best players to “more successful clubs.”
