Match Preview

Both Real Madrid and AS Roma will aim at a win in their final International Champions Cup clash before the commencing of their respective domestic leagues. The former has been involved in just two matches in their tour in the United States, losing by two goals to one against Manchester United in their first and winning via a 3-1 score versus Juventus.

At the moment it looks like Los Blancos are coping well with the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo as some of the club’s youth players have so far shown their resourcefulness. Marco Asensio, who has been tipped to be CR7’s possible successor, scored twice against Juventus whereas new-boy Vinicius Jr earned plaudits with an outstanding performance in the same outing as well as against Man United.

Ahead of the clash with another Italian opposition, Julen Lopetegui will only hope his side can replicate their showing against the Bianconeri.

AS Roma, on the other hand, will be optimistic about their chances to upset the Whites having defeated their arch-rivals Barcelona by four goals to two in their previous encounter. Before the big win, Eusebio De Francesco’s men - just as Real Madrid - started their pre-season campaign on the wrong foot, losing 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur in the opening match.

The Giallorossi, despite losing some of its key players in the likes of Alisson Becker and Radja Nainngolan in this summer transfer window, still poses as a potential force to reckon with following their acquisition of Bryan Cristante, Javier Pastore, Ante Coric, Justin Kluivert and Robin Olsen.

The upcoming test should, as a result, give them the platform to integrate their new men into the team while they gear up for their opening Serie A clash with Torino on August 19.

The game scheduled to be hosted at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA, will be the ninth between Real Madrid and AS Roma. It is somewhat a tie-breaker as both sides have recorded four victories apiece in their previous meetings.
