Why Barcelona Will Never Squander A 7-points LeadIf you try to analyse Barcelona’s team spirit and mentality, put arrogance and complacency aside. The Catalans are covered with majesty and pride as their results and records speak for themselves. Statistics underline Barcelona’s dominance even more in La Liga only.
They have 58 points out of a possible 63, an amazing +56 goal difference, an average of more than 3 goals per match, 11 clean sheets from 21 games and 19 La Liga victories which include a 5-0 trouncing of Real Madrid. With all these achievements, Barca still have the will to go on and win battles which should ultimately help them to defend La Liga title.
Apart from their shocking defeat to Hercules at the beginning of this season, the Catalans have proven not to be scared by any opposition; the name's size of a team doesn't bother the invincible Blaugrana. Barcelona victims Sevilla, Valencia, Real Madrid and company can explain best this fact. So how will Pep Guardiola start dropping a significant amount of points?
Again, do not mention complacency as an answer because Barca never forget to be cautious ahead of matches. Anyone that looks at La Liga’s table standings could think that the hunt for the title is definitely over for second-placed Real Madrid.
However, Los Blancos will prefer to think positively as points get counted at the end of a championship. But like Real Madrid, Coach Pep Guardiola is well aware that “the road is long" and "to win something, Barca cannot falter”. So when will the cat be asleep for the mouse to pass it by?
Whereas Barcelona have won maximum points from their last 3 matches in La Liga, Real Madrid have lost not 1 or 2... but 5! This fact actually seems to go well against the belief of die-hard Los Blancos fans who maintain the idea that Barca may drop points at anytime and thus let Real Madrid capitalise on their rivals’ mistakes.
Well, to be hopeful during tough periods is admirable but to be realistic and to place hope where it must be placed can also be wiser reaction. La Liga is all but over for Real Madrid and if their open wounds from El Clasico’s 5-0 circus still burn, only the Copa del Rey can offer them some healing.
Barcelona have booked their tickets to the final of the competition already; thinking of a comeback for Almeria will even seem ridiculous following their 5-0 loss the other time. So it’s now down to Real Madrid to take their chances and send Sevilla packing to reach the Copa del Rey final for a fight against their good rivals at the top of the mountain.
A good punch from Los Blancos to knock the Catalans all the way down to the rocky ground will take a lot of efforts. But as that is what will offer them cup success for the first time since 2008, then it’s imperative for Real Madrid to think of making things happen. This season’s Copa del Rey has in fact been set for the Spanish giants to burn to ashes all the demons that have allowed Barcelona’s dominance to torture them. But what will Real Madrid make of this opportunity?
