Ironically, that team was none other than Liverpool.

Real Madrid, due to their successful history in Europe, has faced English oppositions often in the past. However, only once have they locked horns with a Premier League side in a European final in their illustrious history.

Ironically, that team was none other than Liverpool – Los Blancos’ enemy in 2017/18 Champions League ultimate showdown. Their clash in Kyiv will be a repeat of the 1980/81 final; however, the Spanish giant will be praying for a different outcome.

The reason is Madrid giant was on the losing end of that encounter, suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Reds. All was well until there were only eight minutes remaining on the clock, with Anfield icon Alan Kennedy scoring the winning goal at the Parc des Princes.

The fact that Liverpool beat the Spanish giant is an amazing feat. The Merseyside outfit is one of only three clubs to beat Real Madrid in a European Cup / Champions League -- the others being Inter Milan and Benfica -- in the Merengues' 15 outing.

Furthermore, Premier League sides have a record of struggling against Spanish outfits in European finals. In fact, Liverpool’s victory was the only time an English side emerged triumphant, with Arsenal losing to Barcelona in 2006 and Man United suffering two defeats against the Blaugrana in 2008 and 2011.

Of course, history will account for little in Saturday’s final. Only a spectacular performance will win the title. Klopp’s men will be hoping to stop Cristiano and Co, but Zidane’s side is a ruthless machine in this competition.
