The veteran goalkeeper has never enjoyed Copa del Rey success with Los Blancos. In fact, Real Madrid fans have to go back to the year 1993 when thinking about the club’s last ever cup glory in this domestic competition.

In 2004, bad luck slapped Los Blancos with a 3-2 defeat to Real Zaragoza in the final of the Copa del Rey; to reach that stage, Real Madrid had defeated Sevilla 2-1 on aggregate and since then, they’ve never went on to even match that feat.

Coincidentally, the Spanish giants have been paired against Sevilla in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey this season just like it happened in 2004; and could history hand a great advantage to Real Madrid by repeating itself?

Well, without thinking about the past, Iker Casillas simply wishes to accomplish the club’s mission of winning the Copa del Rey for the first time 18 years. To do that, Los Blancos imperatively need to beat Sevilla who have been struggling outside the European zone in La Liga this season.

But the Nervionense outfit has managed 3 La Liga victories out of 4 since narrowly losing 1-0 to Real Madrid in December; there is a sense that their potential should definitely not be undervalued against the Spanish giants ahead of the Sevilla vs Real Madrid Copa del Rey fixture. Casillas expects a tough game on Wednesday night as he declared while speaking to Los Blancos’ official website.

“Our match against Sevilla is going to be difficult. Their fans are very supportive and they know how to put a lot of pressure on opponents.

“I think that Sevilla are a very good team although they are not doing as well in La Liga as people thought they would.

“But the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey will be very exciting. We have to try to get a goal in Sevilla.”

Even more exciting is the fact that Real Madrid have an immense chance of meeting arch-rivals Barcelona in the final of the Copa del Rey this year. The Catalans will also be contesting in the semi-final stage of the competition against Almeria. Naturally, Barcelona are favourites to progress onto the ultimate phase.
