He could feature in his first game for Spain against Argentina on Tuesday night.

The Chelsea defender has been one of the standout performers in the Blues' dreary season and, rightfully so, merited a call-up to feature for Spain in the international friendlies.  The left-back was unused in last week's 1-1 draw versus Germany deployed by La Roja in the upcoming game for the first time in his intentional career.

Speaking to Marca ahead of Tuesday's clash with the Albeceleste, Alonso admitted his excitement about getting to play for Spain.

"I am very happy to be here and I'm proud to represent my country," he told Marca.

"Only the coach knows if I will get some minutes on the field. The scene and the opponent could not be better and it will be a beautiful test.

"It would be a dream to play in Russia, the dream of any footballer. I will focus on my club and the game at the [Wanda] Metropolitano."

The 27-year-old full-back has really impressed in the English league this season, having been involved in 10 goals across all competitions - the first defender to reach such a milestone. His call-up to the national team is indeed a special one considering both his father and grandfather donned the famed La Roja jersey in their respective playing days.
