Preview

After decades of frustration, Peru appear to be on the rise again. Many were shocked when Los Incas secured a berth at next year's World Cup ahead of a more-favored Chile side, but since Ricardo Gareca took over, it's been all upwards and onwards for the South American nation. Gareca notably guided them to third place at the 2015 Copa America, and followed that up by getting to the quarter-finals at the special Copa America Centenario a year later.

While many of their players certainly won't be household names like those of upcoming opponents Croatia, Peru have clearly shown that they're not a side to be underestimated. The Vatreni didn't have the easiest time during their World Cup qualifiers, to say the least, and midway through their campaign, coach Ante Cacic was sacked after a surprise defeat to Ukraine. His replacement, Zlatko Dalic, managed to right the wobbly ship and help them secure second spot - although it was hardly a smooth ride.

Croatia had been highly favored to earn top spot in a largely weaker group, but had to secure their spot at this year's World Cup via a two-legged play-off against Greece. Despite boasting a strong squad iwith players like Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic, Ivan Perisic, and Mario Mandzukic among those who play their trades in Europe's "Big 5" leagues, it's safe to assume that the Vatreni won't be underestimating Peru in what should be a very interesting friendly clash in Miami.
