Preview

Both Germany and Spain were quite strong in qualifying, with Julen Lopetegui's side successfully navigating through without losing a single game (nine wins, one draw) and Joachim Low's troops doing even better with a perfect ten wins out of ten.

These two sides have a very interesting history. Back in 2008, they met in the EURO final, during which Fernando Torres's goal was enough to seal the win for La Furia Roja and their first international title since 1964. It also marked a period of success under Vincente Del Bosque, as the team went on to clinch the World Cup two years later followed by another EURO in 2012.

However, Spain have struggled in recent times. They suffered a shock group stage exit at the last World Cup before being beaten in the round of 16 by Italy, but got revenge on the same Azzurri side by beating them 3-0 in Madrid during World Cup qualifiers last year. Suffice it to say, they will be looking to get up and running this year as they aim to re-establish themselves and prove they are serious contenders at this summer's World Cup.

As for Germany, they come into this game having cruised through World Cup qualifiers, and last summer, won their first ever Confederations Cup. Die Mannschaft are hoping to emulate Brazil (in 1958 and 1962) and Italy (in 1934 and 1938) as the third side to successfully defend their World Cup crown in Russia this summer. One notable absentee for the hosts, however, is their preferred no. 1 shot-stopper Manuel Neuer, who still continues his recovery from a foot injury that has kept him from playing for Bayern for much of this season.

Spain have opted to include Brazilian-born Diego Costa thanks to his solid form for Atletico Madrid since leaving Chelsea, and Marcos Alonso has finally received a call-up due to his strong showings for the Blues. However, his club teammates Alvaro Morata and Cesc Fabregas were snubbed, while Juan Mata and AC Milan's Suso are among those who miss out.
