It was reported earlier on that Darren Bent had issued a transfer request letter to Sunderland on Sunday night – much at the surprise and displeasure of Coach Steve Bruce and his club. A statement from Sunderland on Monday read:

“The club can confirm that it has received a written transfer [request] from Darren Bent, following yesterday’s Wear-Tyne derby match.”

It has recently been confirmed that Daren Bent will join Aston Villa for a transfer fee of £18M which could mount to £24M based on the player’s individual statistics among other points. Commentating on this shocking transfer news, Steve Bruce told ESPN Soccernet:

“I’m disappointed. But, that’s the way it is.”

So Sunderland are willing not to obstruct Darren Bent’s move to Aston Villa as they may not always get the chance to receive as much as £18M from any club for such a player. Darren Bent moved from Charlton to Spurs for £16.5M in 2007 before joining Sunderland in 2009 for a transfer fee of £10M.
