Real Madrid “promised” not to buy any player in January, but transfer news from Portugal claim that Fabio Coentrao has agreed a deal with Los Blancos. What an interesting move from Real Madrid!
Fabio Coentrao is actually one of the hottest youngsters on the field at the moment – not only in the Portuguese national team or Liga, but in the whole of Europe. The Benfica defender, who had a miserable spell with Real Zaragoza back in 2008, could return to Spain – this time, at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Daily Record reported that Real Madrid are in fact looking for reinforcement in defence as Jose Mourinho and co. aren't impressed with left-back Marcelo. Based on this note, Los Blancos have agreed a deal for the transfer of Fabio Coentrao, says the Portuguese news source.

What is intriguing, however, is that the 22-year-old still has as much as 5 years left on his current contract with Benfica. So how will Real Madrid manage to bring the defender – who has been valued at €30M, by the way – at the Bernabeu?

Well, speculations explain that Fabio Coentrao’s transfer from Benfica to Real Madrid may only happen in summer. However, the Spanish giants could pull out a surprise transfer as early as in January since Jose Mourinho and Coentrao share the same agent – Jorge Mendes.

Whether these claims from the Daily Record are transfer rumours rather than reports, the public will continue to keep a close eye on Real Madrid throughout the month of January. One thing is certain ahead of Thursday night’s Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid Copa del Rey quarter-final match: Benfica’s Fabio Coentrao won’t be playing alongside countrymen Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Carvalho.
