The former Arsenal defender criticized the Chilean's desire to leave the club after multiple attempts to keep him around.

Alexis Sánchez had escaped criticism from Arsenal legends, but today, he was harshly slammed by none other than Martin Keown.

The former Arsenal defender criticized Alexis' ways to end his relationship with the Gunners, emphasizing on the fact that the Chilean could have left Arsenal to join Manchester City instead.

"He probably thought that he wouldn't get a better offer if he waited for the summer transfer window, so he decided to sign with the highest bidder. It was all about the money. He's the biggest mercenary in the history of football," Keown stated.

Keown ellaborated on why Sánchez should have waited to join the Citizens rather than signing with Mourinho's team.

"(Manchester) City would have been the best place for him to develop his skills. He's worked under Pep before, but we know now that he made his choice without thinking which team is the best right now," the former player added.

Keown played  332 games for Arsenal over thirteen years.

Despite not hiding his anger against Sánchez, Keown praised Man United's efforts to lure the player away from their neighbors.

"Signing Sánchez is a blow from Manchester United to Manchester City. Their squad is much better now. If we want our league to be competitive, we can't allow Manchester City to sign every good player out there," Keown concluded.
