Wenger gives positive Ozil update

Wenger gives positive update on Ozil’s Arsenal future

January 13, 2018 By Ali M.
The German is one of three key players whose contract ends in the summer, but Arsenal is working hard on an extension.

While all the headlines have surrounded Alexis Sanchez’s future with Arsenal, questions still linger over Mesut Ozil’s career with the Gunners. The German playmaker is another player whose contract ends in the summer, with an extension yet to be signed.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth, Wenger spoke of the World Cup winner and his future at the Emirates Stadium. The Frenchman gave supporters the positive update they have been waiting for, claiming that Ozil’s case is not a lost cause.

Le Prof is “increasingly confident” that the German will not walk out the door as a free agent come the summer transfer window. Jack Wilshere is another player who will be out of contract once the season ends, but Wenger insisted he is keen to finalize a new deal for the Englishman.

The same, unfortunately, could not be said about Alexis Sanchez, with Wenger admitting that the Chilean will not put pen to paper on an extension. A January exit could be possible should a replacement be found, with Man City and Man United battling it out for the South American ace.

"It looks like Sanchez will not extend his contract," Wenger said (as per the Sun).

“But we want to keep Jack and if we have an opportunity maybe to keep Ozil, the rebuild will be less deep than if all three left.”

Losing Alexis but keeping Ozil and Wilshere is an easier setback to overcome than replacing all three players. Arsene also admitted that he plans to complete his contract at Arsenal until 2019, meaning the Frenchman will be tasked with rebuilding the club once more.
