Both competitions enter the knockout stage, but a draw must first be held in Nyon, Switzerland.

The group stage of both the Champions League and Europa League are behind us. This means only one thing remains before this season’s knockout rounds begin: the draw.

The Champions League will go straight into the last 16, but Europe’s second-tier club competition enters the round of 32 first. A draw will be held to determine the fixtures of both rounds.

Here’s everything you need to know.

When and where will the draw be held?

Both will be held in Nyon, Switzerland. The Champions League draw will come first, kicking off at 6:00 ET / 11:00 GMT on Monday, December 11. The Europa League draw comes immediately after the first one ends.

How does the draw work?

Champions League

The remaining 16 teams will be split into two pots. All the group winners go into pot 1, while the second-placed teams fall into pot 2. Two clubs from the same group or same country cannot face each other.

Europa League

With eight third-placed teams from the Champions League dropping into the Europa League, the best four will join the 12 group winners in the pot 1. All the others will go into the unseeded pot 2. Similarly, two teams from the same pot, group, or country cannot be drawn against each other.

Champions League

Pot 1: Man United, PSG, Roma, Barcelona, Liverpool, Man City, Besiktas, and Tottenham

Pot 2: Basel, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus, Sevilla, Shakhtar Donetsk, Porto, and Real Madrid

Europa League

Pot 1: AC Milan, Arsenal, Atalanta, Athletic Club, Atletico Madrid, Braga, CSKA Moscow, Dynamo Kyiv, Lazio, RB Leipzig, Lokomotiv Moscow, Plzen, Salzburg, Sporting CP, Villarreal, and Zenit

Pot 2: AEK Athens, Astana, Celtic, Crvena zvezda, Dortmund, FCSB, København, Ludogorets, Lyon, Marseille, Napoli, Nice, Östersund, Partizan, Real Sociedad, and Spartak Moscow

When will the knockout stage games be played?

In the Champions League, the first leg is scheduled for 13/14 and 20/21 February. The second leg will be played on 6/7 and 13/14 March, with the unseeded teams starting at home.

In the Europa League, the unseeded teams will be at home in the first leg as well. The two-leg ties will be played on Thursdays 15th and 22nd February next year - the exact schedule will be announced after the draw.
