On Thursday, Cristiano Ronaldo added another individual prize to a successful year with Real Madrid. The Portuguese superstar won the 2017 Ballon d’Or, beating rival Lionel Messi to the coveted trophy.
The 32-year-old was named the recipient of France Football’s prestigious prize, adding it to the FIFA Best Men’s Player honor he clinched earlier this season. This was Ronaldo’s fifth Ballon d’Or win, equaling the record for most wins set by La Pulga.
The Blancos ace was clear favorite. Afterleading his Spanish team to the Champions League and La Liga titles, the former Man United attacker was destined to add another trophy to his individual accolades cabinet.
Speaking after his win, however, the player made a remark about his status in the history of football that many might disagree with. The recently crowned Ballon d’Or winner told France Football that he believes he is the greatest player of all-time.
“I don’t see anyone better than me. No player does things that I cannot do myself.
"But I see things others can’t do. There’s no more complete player than me. I’m the best player in history — in the good and the bad moments.”

This opinion that Cristiano is the best player in history is a debated topic, as many refuse to put the Portugal captain ahead of football’s great. Others, on the other hand, point to the player’s astonishing statistics as proof of his superiority.
While many will never accept Cristiano as the best of all time, the Real Madrid player can show why he was chosen as the best player in the world when his side takes on Sevilla. Zidane’s crew looks to climb up the table, but face a tricky test at home to the Andalusian club.
