Intensity is the first word that comes to mind when you think about Gennaro Gattuso's playing career. Nevertheless, the former midfielder wants to send that word out of the window and try to make people focus on his ability to lead a team with his tactics.
Speaking in the press conference where he was confirmed as Milan's interim boss, Gattuso urged those who criticize his appointment to look at his previous jobs as a coach before judging why he got there in the first place.
"I've coached over 100 games in many leagues, and you're treating me like a rookie. Speaking about who I was as a player is rather simple, but I've studied, I've got my coach's card, I've studied and I have traveled as well. You can't just prepare your tactics for a game based on strength and heart," Gattuso stated.
The Italian boss admitted that the current squad lacks experience, and maybe that's why they've struggled to leave their mark this season despite their talent.
"We need to change. The ball is "heavier" here in San Siro. I want to give something else to these players, so when they enter the pitch they're prepared both physically and mentally," the coach added.
Gattuso revealed having private chats with some of his former team-mates and coaches, who wished him the best.
"I received messages from Terim, Cannavaro, Sacchi and Ancelotti, and all of them urged me to work hard with these players. I've read that we have some easy games coming up, but there's no such thing as an easy game in Serie A. I don't feel as an interim boss, there are 72 points left this season and I'm going to embrace this opportunity," Gattuso concluded.
