Italy failed to qualify for Russia in Gigi’s final official game, leaving the Juventus icon in tears.

Monday was a heartbreaking day for one of the most iconic goalkeepers to grace the beautiful game: Gianluigi Buffon. The 39-year-old shot-stopper, who promised to end his career once this season ends, was vying to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in what would have been his last major tournament as a professional player.

But that was sadly not meant to be. The Juventus icon and his Azzurri team-mates were left devastated at the final whistle, as Ventura’s side drew 0-0 with Sweden in the playoffs. This means the four-time world champion misses out on a ticket to Russia, having lost 1-0 in the first leg.

Speaking to journalists after the final whistle, Buffon could not hold back the tears. Admitting that this was his final game for the national side, it was not a befitting farewell of the Italian legend.

Many were quick to comfort the custodian, including Swedish players who embraced the tearful Gigi. The most heartwarming message, however, came via Twitter from fellow goalkeeping icon Iker Casillas.

The two shot-stoppers have a good relationship and were always seen chatting it up during their run-ins in the Champions League and Euro 2014. A heartfelt tribute could not have come from a better player.

The former Spanish international wrote: “I don’t like to see you like this. I see you how many other still see you: a legend. I’m proud to know you and proud to have faced you many times. You can still delight us in friendly football!”

Buffon earned 175 caps with Italy, but this is the end of the road in his illustrious run with the national side. He can now focus solely on winning Serie A and possibly the Champions League with Juventus.
