OM fires Evra after lengthy ban set on player

Evra handed 7-month ban; agrees to part ways with Olympique Marseille

November 10, 2017 By Oscar Rojas
The French defender has been involved in controversy ever since he kicked a fan on the head prior to an Europa League match.

The verdict on Patrice Evra was harsh, and as a result, the French footballer has been let go by Olympique Marseille.

Earlier today, UEFA's Disciplinary Board handed Evra a 7-month ban after kicking an OM fan's head prior to the match between the French team and Vitoria Guimaraes. Evra was sent off before the game started and was temporarily suspended from the team.

Today, the club issued a press release to announce the end of the player's contract.

"Since January 2017 Patrice Evra has exhibited exemplary behaviour on the pitch and in the changing rooms. He played an important role in the team's revival, the significant improvement in its results and the rebirth of greater sporting ambitions," the press release states.

"On 2nd November at Guimarães he committed an unforgiveable error by responding to the outrageous provocations of a handful of individuals. Nevertheless, nothing, in form or substance, can justify such a blunder, especially on the part of such an experienced players whose behaviour on and off the field is an inspiration to young people," the document adds.

The club referred to those fans involved in this incident, warning them that such behavior will not be tolerated.

"Whilst the club is very attached to the atmosphere on its terraces and recognises the relentless and sometimes difficult work of some groups of fans, it will sanction those among them who commit this sort of lapse," the press release concludes.
