Preview: How they got here

Sweden

Despite a solid tournament, Sweden were unable to pip France to top spot, but they were able to prevent the Netherlands from snatching second place. The hosts have been quite excellent, especially on home turf, and are unbeaten in their last seven competitive fixtures. More important, of course, is their performance against Italy, with just one defeat, but their last meeting resulted in a narrow 1-0 loss at EURO 2016.

Still, the team have been able to cope quite well since the retirement of talismanic striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and it will be very interesting to see how they manage against an Italian side who have not been exactly at their very best as of late.

Italy

Given that they were placed in the same group as Spain - a decision that raised many eyebrows especially due to the make-up of some of the other European qualifying groups - either Italy or Spain was already going to have to book their spot at next year's World Cup through the play-offs. The Azzurri had managed to keep pace with Spain throughout, until losing 3-0 to La Furia Roja in Madrid, which effectively knocked them down to second place.

As things stand, Italy, who have won four World Cups, are the only winners yet to book their spot at the World Cup. Brazil, Germany, Uruguay, Argentina, France, Spain, England are already on the plane to Russia next year, and there is the realistic chance that the Azzurri could actually end up missing out on the quadrennial tournament for the first time since 1958, when ironically, perhaps, it was held in Sweden.
