The FA has confirmed Video Assistant Referee technology usage for their friendly clash with Germany.

The FA will take a huge step towards incorporating VAR technology in their competitions on Friday after confirming its use in an official game for the first time on English soil. The Three Lions’ clash with Germany will be the lucky fixture ahead of a wider inception throughout this and the upcoming seasons.

There have been calls from fans and managers in the Premier League for Video Assistant Referee system in order to eliminate officiating blunders. Although this isn’t entirely new in England, as VAR has graced a charity game, the same cannot be said for official matches.

VAR technology could take refereeing to a new high, as it can help officials when handing out red cards, awarding penalties, and flagging offsides. The latter two were two calls that came under scrutiny, as Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger slammed the FA and the level of officiating after those decisions went against the Gunners in their loss to Man City.

The aforementioned system is the in the plans for certain third-round FA Cup ties. If all goes well, the technology will be introduced in the 2017/18 season of the English top-flight.

VAR and goal-line technology, a system which has been around for a while, could be the catalyst for drastic improvement in officiating that supporters have been demanding. All eyes in England will be on Friday’s friendly.
