Match Facts & Stats

  • Greece could become the first UEFA member nation to reach three World Cups in a row via the play-offs, having done so in 2010 and 2014
  • Croatia have secured a spot at four previous tournaments (WC 1998, WC 2014, EURO 2004, EURO 2012) via play-off, which is also a record
  • Greece are hoping to make a fourth appearance at a World Cup, whilst Croatia are seeking their fifth appearance
  • Kostas Mitroglou, with six goals, was the top goal-scorer for his national side
  • Mario Mandzukic's five goals were the highest output for the Vatreni
  • Head-to-head: Croatia have won one, drawn three, and lost twice against Greece

Preview: How they got here

Croatia

Both teams come into this game having finished as runners-up in their respective groups. For Croatia, it was a disappointing outcome, especially given that the Vatreni had initially led the way ahead of a group that included debutants Iceland, Ukraine, and Turkey. However, a series of bad results, including a surprise draw with Finland, as well as a loss to Turkey, saw Iceland jump ahead, and despite beating Ukraine on the final matchday, it was not enough to re-claim top spot and now they will have to take on Greece in this upcoming double header to try to book one of the remaining places at next year's World Cup.

Greece

As for Greece, they arguably faced a much sterner test from the outset as Belgium - who at one point were actually ranked no. 1 in the world - were in their group. They ended up finishing a whopping nine points behind the Red Devils, so it's no surprise that they ended up at this juncture. The EURO 2004 winners were pretty solid during qualifying, winning five of their games and losing just once, and they will seek to cause Croatia some major problems ahead of the return leg in Piraeus next week.
