On Tuesday, Syria locked horns with Australia in an odd World Cup qualifier. None expected the worn-torn nation to achieve much, but they shocked many to battle the Socceroos for AFC’s playoff berth.
Syria, sadly, were unable to over their opponents despite their brave display. Two goals from Tim Cahill – the latter coming in extra time – cancelled Omar Al Somah early opener.
The visitors, who had a player sent off, even saw a free-kick ricochet off the post just before the final whistle for the second-half of extra time was blown. The Syrian players were left in tears, breaking down on a playoff spot.
Although the nation couldn’t beat Australia, their gallant effort was enough to win over the hearts of many. Check out the tweets below.
Painful watching the Syrian players in tears. Wish they could have England's place. At least Syria will actually have a go

Never seen someone almost in tears stepping up to take a free kick while his team mate prays behind him. This is more than football. #Syria

That is just simply heartbreaking for Syria. Unreal effort. Deserve humongous credit for that match. Would’ve loved to seen them at the WC.

Now Tim Cahill and Co. await their opponent in the playoffs. Australia, who are set to lock horns with the fourth-placed team in the CONCACAF qualifiers, will meet either USA, Panama, or Honduras in the road to Russia.
