Rather than being mad for not having his striker around, Pep Guardiola stepped up and shared a message of support for Sergio Aguero, who was involved in a near-fatal crash on Thursday evening.
The player was granted a day off following the team's performance in the UEFA Champions League, and he decided to attend a concert by Colombian singer Maluma. When he was heading to Amsterdam's airport, the cab he was travelling in slipped and slammed against a post, breaking Aguero's rib in the process.
Speaking in today's press conference, Guardiola defended Aguero's right to spend his day off the way he chose to, even if he was involved in such an incident.
"A day off is to be happy. It is not a problem for me [that he was in Amsterdam]. He was on a day off. I have not spoken to him. He is okay that is the main thing," Guardiola stated.
The cab's airbags also provided safety for the driver and Aguero, who is said to have saved his life for using his seat belt.
The coach went on to explain why he's OK with his players leaving the country despite having training sessions scheduled for the day after.
"I am a trainer who doesn't want to train every day because they [the players] need to rest, mentally and physically. It was an accident and he will recover as soon as possible," the coach concluded.
As the news about his accident broke, Sergio Agüero shared his fitness status with Juan Pablo Varsky, an Argentine journalist.
Varsky texted Agüero as he laid on his hospital bed. He later shared those messages on his show called "No Somos Nadie" produced by Metro Radio.
"I'm at the hospital right now. I'm resting, but I'll be discharged later. My rib hurts really bad," Aguero texted Varsky.
Aguero also shared a description of the incident.
"The cab driver didn't see the curve and slipped. Moments later, we crashed against the post," the player added.
Sergio Agüero was two goals away from becoming Manchester City's all-time goal scoring leader. Aside from missing Sunday's clash against Chelsea, Agüero will miss the last two World Cup Qualifiers for Argentina, who needed the in-form striker to try and secure their spot in next year's competition.
