Roma facing tough test against history - and Atletico Madrid on matchday one

Roma

The Giallorossi have had a less than solid start to the season. Roma's clash against Sampdoria was called off due to bad weather, and Eusebio Di Francesco's men started off with an away win to Atalanta, but it was less than an assured performance. Most recently, they ended up losing to Inter, but having seen their league game cancelled at the weekend, they may be a lot more rested than their opponents, which could either be an advantage or disadvantage for this upcoming game.

Roma have struggled historically in the Champions League, however. The Lupi have won just one out of their last seven UCL home games, and more important, haven't beaten any Spanish sides on home turf since the 2007/2008 edition of this tournament. They're no strangers to Atletico Madrid, but failed to beat them in their prior two meetings, which was during the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup back in 1999.

Atletico Madrid

It's been a relatively solid, but not stellar start to the domestic campaign for Atletico Madrid. Los Rojiblancos nearly suffered a rather embarrassing result against a newly promoted Girona but were able to salvage a 2-2 draw on opening day, before rebounding on matchday two to beat Las Palmas 5-1. They come into this game having drawn Valencia 0-0 and will be able to rely on key man Antoine Griezmann as his ban does not apply to European competition.

Atleti have dealt with their fair share of heartbreak in the Champions League as of late. In 2014 and 2016, they made it to the final only to be thwarted by cross-town rivals Real Madrid, and last season, were again beaten by their city rivals during the semi-finals. In fact, all four of their Champions League campaigns have ended at the hands of Real Madrid, but fortunately for Simeone's side, they have a good record against Roma - having beaten them twice in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals nearly two decades ago.

However, Atletico have won just three out of their last nine Champions League games on the road. Will they be able to take advantage of Roma's bad record against Spanish sides to pick up a vital win? With Chelsea also in this group, this match could eventually prove decisive in who ends up qualifying for the round of 16 and who has to settle for a spot in the Europa League by finishing in third.
