As things stand, the Netherlands are sitting in a rather uncomfortable position. Having missed out on EURO 2016, the Oranje are dangerously close to missing out on the upcoming World Cup as well. The hosts come into this game having suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss to France, and with Kevin Strootman now suspended after getting a red card during that match, Dick Advocaat now faces an even tougher selection battle as to whom to field for this must-win clash.
Given that Bulgaria managed to somehow shock Sweden to win 3-2, the Netherlands now are actually two points behind their upcoming visitors. Bulgaria's win was that much more surprising considering the fact that they lost to minnows Belarus 2-1 a few months back, but then again, they did manage to beat the Netherlands 2-0 in March, so are truly a rather unpredictable side.
In any case, it goes without saying that this is a must win for the Oranje, as a loss will pretty much rule out any chance they have of snatching a runners-up spot and heading into the play-off rounds for a ticket to the World Cup tournament next year.
