Liverpool aim to start domestic campaign off on right foot

Liverpool

With a Champions League play-off against Hoffenheim looming, Jurgen Klopp will know that his team will need to approach this game quite carefully. The Reds will be in action on Tuesday and that game is a must-win for them in order to ensure that they will have one foot into the group stage, but nonetheless, Liverpool won't want to drop points in their season opener, either.

Klopp will already have to make do without the services of key midfielder Adam Lallana due to a thigh injury. Meanwhile, Philippe Coutinho ended up missing Liverpool's last two pre-season matches with a back injury, while he has also been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, and although the team l did reject his transfer request, it remains to be seen whether he features for the Reds on Saturday. Meanwhile,  Jordan Henderson missed their friendly with Athletic Bilbao due to illness but is expected to recover and captain the side for their season opener. Unfortunately, Daniel Sturridge suffered yet another setback in his return to full fitness during pre-season and could be in doubt for this fixture.

Watford

Meanwhile, Watford have a frustrating record against Liverpool. Not only have they lost their last six games, but also have only won one of their last nine meetings with the Reds across all competitions. In addition, Watford have only managed to score in two of their last six matches against Liverpool. The hosts also come into this game with a series of injury concerns of their own. Key striker Troy Deeney has struggled with a groin injury during pre-season and isn't expected to recover in time, and the Hornets only managed to score more than one goal in one of their six pre-season friendlies.

All in all, they are expected to struggle to contain the Reds' attack, which has been bolstered further by additions including the signing of Roma's Mohamed Salah this summer.
