Bayern Munich take on familiar opponent Jurgen Klopp in pre-season opener

Bayern Munich

It's been a rather disappointing pre-season for Carlo Ancelotti's side. Although they were able to beat Chelsea, die Roten barely hung on for all three points in that fixture. The Bavarians took an early lead as they blitzed the Blues for three early goals, but conceded two as Antonio Conte's men awoke from their stupor and were quite close to snatching a draw.

There were also losses to Arsenal, AC Milan, and Inter. Whilst the defeat to the Gunners was via spot-kicks, again, in that match, Bayern had a narrow 1-0 lead and conceded very late in the match. Against the Rossoneri, they were surprisingly poor and shipped four sans reply, and offered little in reply to Inter, losing that match 2-1. The only goal they grabbed was due to a rather embarrassing own goal from Geoffrey Kondogiba attempting a questionable back-pass to his own goalkeeper under little pressure.

Still, in all fairness, it was not a full-strength Bayern squad, as arguably under normal circumstances, die Roten would have at least done much better against the Rossoneri. Ancelotti was missing several first-team stars, including first-choice shot-stopper Manuel Neuer and central midfielder Arturo Vidal, whilst Jerome Boateng also did not feature. Unfortunately, the Asia tour now has cost him the services of Thiago as well as Juan Bernat. And Arjen Robben, who has struggled with injuries over the past few seasons, may be in doubt for this upcoming game alongside with Franck Ribery.

Liverpool

Meanwhile, Liverpool have done quite well in their pre-season preparations so far. The Reds have won three and drawn one of their pre-season fixtures. They have conceded just one goal, which was during a one-all draw with Wigan Athletic on July 14th. That being said, it goes without saying that their opposition, which comprised of Sydney FC, Tranmere Rovers, Hertha Berlin, and the aforementioned Wigan - are a couple notches below what Jurgen Klopp's men will be facing in the upcoming Audi Cup.

And that's exactly what the Reds need ahead of their upcoming Premier League season. The win over Hertha Berlin did come at a major cost, however. Both Divock Origi and Dejan Lovren may miss out on this upcoming game due to muscular complaints, but James Milner may feature after sitting out on last weekend's fixture. Sadio Mane, who has been out since April, will be expected to get some more game-time as Klopp will be hoping to give his star man more minutes to get him up to speed ahead of Liverpool's upcoming domestic and continental campaigns. And new signing Mohamed Salah, brought in from Roma this summer, will be definitely deployed again in the starting XI to help him get further acquainted with his new teammates.
