Match Facts & Stats

  • This will be Arsenal's first visit to Australia since the late 1970's (nearly 40 years)
  • The Gunners are out of the Champions League for the first time since manager Arsene Wenger took over back in 1996 by finishing fifth in the Premier League last season
  • Meanwhile, Sydney FC won the Australian Premier League title last term
  • They're also the only A-League side to win the OFC Champions League

Arsenal's star-studded squad aiming to start pre-season off well

Although they won the FA Cup last term by beating Chelsea 2-1, Arsenal fans were nonetheless still disappointed with Arsene Wenger, and there are still those who are upset about the Frenchman remaining in charge for the upcoming campaign. That being said, Arsenal have been active in the transfer market, with Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette being among their biggest signings. Whilst Alexis Sanchez's future is still up in the air, Mesut Ozil looks set to stay - at least for now.

Sanchez and Shkodran Mustafi will miss out after featuring in this summer's Confederations Cup final for Chile and Germany respectively, whilst Barcelona target Hector Bellerin is also being given a break after playing in the U-21 EURO championships with Spain. Meanwhile, Aaron Ramsey, Laurent Koscielny, Petr Cech, Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck and Oliver Giroud are among the notable names joining Ozil and Lacazette on the Gunners' tour of Australia.

As for Sydney FC, they won the A-League title last term and will be hoping to make a splash in front of what will be a sell-out crowd. Can they pull off what would be a huge upset on home turf?
