  • Martinique have featured at four prior Gold Cups (in 1993, 2002, 2003, and 2013)
  • Their best ever finish was a quarter-finals berth at the 2002 edition
  • This will be the second meeting between the USMNT and Martinique
  • The first was back in 2003, when Brian McBride's brace was enough to give the Stars and Stripes all three points during a group stage tie

USMNT keen on getting campaign up and running against surprise group leaders

USA

The USMNT were brimming with confidence after beating Ghana 2-1 in a warm-up friendly clash prior to this tournament. However, that confidence took a major hit as Bruce Arena's side were held to a 1-1 draw with Panama. Despite Dom Dwyer continuing his good start with the team since making his debut earlier this month by scoring a goal, it was not enough to earn the Yanks all three points. Panama have become a source of frustration for the USA, and Saturday's game was no exception.

Still, the tournament hosts are expected to qualify for the next round, albeit they will obviously need to pick up maximum points here. Arena was left quite frustrated with his team's efforts and naturally will be demanding a much better showing from his men, as Martinique will be hoping to nick at least a point after earning a hard-fought victory in their opener.

Martinique

David Regis is surely a name that may ring a bell for older USMNT fans. Why? Well, Regis was part of Arena's squad that won the 2002 World Cup after becoming eligible for selection following marriage to an American. Now, Regis will be on the opposite side of the pitch as he takes on his former coach and hopes to stage an upset.

Martinique come into this game having beaten Nicaragua 2-0, courtesy of goals from Kevin Parsemain and Steeven Langil. Both attackers, who are 29 and ply their trades for two-time Martinique champs Golden Lion and Polish outfit Legia Warsaw respectively, will naturally be the go-to men as Martinique aim to cause as many problems for the USA as possible. With 28 goals, Parsemain is his country's all-time top goalscorer and had a brief spell with Seattle Sounders that was unfortunately ended abruptly due to a knee injury.
