Match Facts & Stats

  • Panama are the only team so far to have beaten the USMNT in a Gold Cup group stage match
  • That was back on June 11, 2011, and is also the only time Panama have beaten the USA in 18 attempts
  • The USMNT has a head to head record of W12-D5-L1 against their upcoming opponents
  • The Stars and Stripes are ranked 35th, whilst Panama sit in 52nd
  • Los Canaleros and the Yanks last met at the 2015 Gold Cup, which saw Panama defeat the USA via spot-kick shootout in the third-placed match
  • The USA have won this tournament five times - only second to Mexico's seven
  • Meanwhile, Panama's best finishes have been runners-up in 2005 and 2013 and taking third place in 2011 and 2015

A young and somewhat inexperienced USA squad prepares to take on a very familiar foe Panama

The USA come into this game having earned a 2-1 win over Ghana. Whilst that was just a friendly, it was exactly the confidence booster the Yanks needed, and it saw debutant Dom Dwyer net his first ever international goal. It was also the first goal for Kellyn Acosta since making his debut in 2016. However, another newcomer to the squad, Kenny Saief - who switched national football affiliation from Israel to the USA - suffered a groin injury and will not be able to take part in his first major tournament.

With minnows Martinique and Nicaragua also in their group, Panama will arguably represent the USA's hardest opponent. As such, Bruce Arena's side will be eager to not just pick up all three points, but also exact revenge for consigning them to fourth place at the last edition of this tournament.

Meanwhile, Panama notably don't have the best of records against the USMNT, but they have enjoyed a measure of success in recent times. In addition, they managed to draw the Stars and Stripes 1-1 in a World Cup qualifier earlier this year, so it's not a game that Arena and his team will be approaching in a casual manner.
