Match Facts & Stats

  • Spain are the second most successful side in this competition, with four wins
  • La Rojita's last victory was in 2013
  • Meanwhile, Germany have won the title only once - back in 2009
  • This will be the first EURO U-21 final meeting between Spain and Germany

How they got here

Germany

Germany, as expected, easily cruised to comfortable wins against Czech Republic and Denmark, prior to taking on Italy. The young Mannschaft, however, ended up conceding their first goal in this tournament as they lost 1-0 to the Azzurini, but nonetheless they still booked their spot in the final four. Of course, not everyone was happy - even those who weren't even in their group. Namely, Slovakia, showing a clear display of sour grapes, complained about the result as they were dumped out of the tournament and accused both Germany and Italy of conspiring to fix the match.

Whether that's valid, or just a case of a bitter side throwing a hissy fit that they didn't make it to the semi finals is irrelevant at this point. Germany have been quite impressive so far, but had to secure their spot in the finals via spot-kick shoot-out against England. That game had gone to extra time, and ultimately finished 2-2, so having played 120 minutes - as opposed to Spain, who settled their game in regulation time - it will be interesting to see if fatigue will play any factor as Germany seek to win their first U-21 EURO title since 2009.

Spain

After failing to successfully defend their title at the 2015 edition, Spain have been a team on a mission this time around. La Rojita were absolutely flawless in their group, and concluded that campaign with a perfect nine points out of nine. They easily brushed aside Eastern European outfits Macedonia and Serbia, outscoring both by an aggregate of six goals to nil (including five against Macedonia), and held their nerve to successfully overpower a tricky Portugal side 3-1.

Having netted nine times and conceded just one, they next took on Italy in the semi-finals. Although the first 45 finished 0-0, things began to open up in the second period, and Spain, led by Atletico Madrid rising star Saul's hat-trick, trounced a ten-man Azzurini 3-1. Now, only Germany will stand in their way from joining Italy on the most EURO U-21 titles won, and victory would make it three titles in just six years.
