Those three countries all stand a chance of making the semi-final, but only two will qualify.

On Saturday, play in the FIFA Confederations Cup resumes. The last group stage matches will be played over the weekend, with Group A being decided first.

In the lead are Mexico and Portugal, tied with four points each. The hosts Russia are hot on their trails with three points. This means the top three are all in the remaining for qualification.

This is how Group A has shaped up.

Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Group A, FIFA Confederations Cup

Mexico (4 points, Goal difference: +1)

An excellent 2-1 comeback win over New Zealand left El Tri in the hunt for qualification. Their last Group A game will see them clash with Russia. If Chicharito and Co. lose and Portugal draw or win, Mexico will pack their bags.

A draw with the hosts will be enough for the CONCACAF champions to make the last 4. However, since Cristiano and Co. face the already-eliminated New Zealand, victory is a must in order to win the group.

Portugal (4 points, Goal difference: +1)

Fernando Santos’ men will likely beat the Kiwis in their final group stage game, but even a draw is enough to see them qualify. The Euro 2016 winners must win by a better margin than Mexico to claim top spot, but could be without Cristiano Ronaldo (rested) for their final group game.

Javier Hernandez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal, Mexico, FIFA Confederations Cup

Russia (3 points, Goal difference: +1)

Russia are in third, but beating Mexico – a possibility – would see the hosts qualify. Anything but victory would eliminate Stanislav Cherchesov’s side. If they beat El Tri and Portugal draw with New Zealand, Russia will finish as group leaders.

Does winning the group matter?

On most occasions, it does. However, Chile and Germany await the two Group A teams to qualify, winning the group will still earn one team a difficult opponent.
