Russia hope to start off debut Confederations Cup campaign off on good note

Russia

Russia had a very poor EURO 2016 campaign that saw them pick up just one point out of their three games against England, Slovakia, and Wales. The Sbornaya, however, have seen an uptick in fortunes as of late they have lost just one out of their last five fixtures. That came after a bad run that saw them lose three out of their prior four, including a 2-1 reversal to Qatar.

Current coach Stanislav Cherchesov has seen a total overhaul of the side that failed to make the grade at the EURO tournament last summer. With Portugal and Mexico also in their group, New Zealand will arguably represent their best chance at picking up three points.

New Zealand

As for New Zealand, they are viewed as the weakest team in not just this group but also in the entire tournament. Although they are the OFC champs, that competition is viewed as the weakest as compared to the AFCON, EURO, Copa America, Gold Cup, AFC, and of course, the World Cup - especially as Australia opted to switch to the Asian confederation back in 2006.

For all intents and purposes, Russia will represent the least threatening of New Zealand's upcoming opponents, so this game will be their best opportunity to try to get anything out of what looks set to be a tough competition for the All Whites.
