Both Nigeria and South Africa aiming to start off AFCON 2019 qualifying on high note

Nigeria

Arguably, with Seychelles, Libya, and South Africa in their group, Nigeria are viewed as the heavy favorites to progress - and that is despite the Super Eagles failing to even qualify for the last two editions of this tournament. That being said, they have struggled somewhat against South Africa as of late, as they have failed to beat them in their last three meetings.

Currently under the tutelage of German tactician Gernot Rohr, the Super Eagles come into this game having earned a confidence-boosting win over Togo in a friendly. There are several Premier League-based stars in this squad, including Leicester City's Ahmed Musa, Arsenal's Alex Iwobi, and Manchester City's Kelechi Iheanacho, but Chelsea starlet Ola Aina has not been included in the group for this match.

South Africa

Meanwhile, South Africa have also seen some changers on the tactician's bench. Scottish boss Stuart Baxter has returned for a second spell after first being in charge from 2004 to 2005. Baxter is also no stranger to beating Nigeria, having done so back in November 2004. Bafana Bafana are presently unbeaten in their last three games against Nigeria - and it will be very interesting to see of Baxter can kick-start his tenure with a positive results against one of Africa's stronger sides on Saturday.

Match Facts & Stats

  • Asamoah Gyan is currently just one goal away from hitting a half century (50) of goals
  • Gyan - along with Samuel Eto'o - is the only player to score in six straight AFCON tournaments
  • Ghana are ranked 49th in the world, whilst Ethiopia are ranked 125th
  • The two sides have met three times, with two wins for the Black Stars and one for Ethiopia

Asamoah Gyan seeking to hit huge milestone against Ethiopia

Ghana

Although skipper Asamoah Gyan missed out as Ghana recently cruised to a 6-1 win over Asokwa Deportivo in a pre-match warm-up, the 31-year-old is expected to feature in the starting XI on Sunday. Kwesi Appiah is back for another spell, and Gyan will be aiming to finally hit 50 goals for Ghana and find the back of the net for the first time in over five months.

As Gyan hopes to get back on track, Appiah will be hoping for the same. The last time he was in charge was during Ghana's awful showing at the 2014 World Cup. Reports of player mutiny within the ranks were rife in the local press, and the Black Stars crashed out at the group stage after shockingly losing to the United States (whom they had beaten 2-1 in the 2006 and 2010 edtions) in their opening game before drawing with Germany and ultimately being defeated by Portugal.

Next up are some tantalizing - but possibly tough - friendlies with Mexico and the Stars and Stripes, and interestingly, quite a few players who featured at AFCON 2017 are not included in the squad. That being said, both Ayew brothers (Jordan and Andre) are included, as is Atletico Madrid's Thomas Partey.

Ethiopia

Meanwhile, Ethiopia were once of the premier sides in Africa, but that was back in the early 1960's. Since then, they have struggled to make inroads on the continental stage after winning the AFCON tournament in 1962. The Walias finally ended their frustrating record at AFCON competitions by making an appearance in 2013, where they crashed out on the group stage.

That being said, Ethiopia's head to head record against Ghana indicates they have won one out of their last three meetings. Furthermore, there have been just a total of five goals scored - two for the Walias and three for the Black Stars. Could fans see a very close game on Sunday, then?
