Lyon facing battle against tough side - and history - in first leg versus Ajax

Ajax

The hosts come into this game having suffered defeats in their last two games. Against Schalke, they were nearly knocked out of the Europa League after conceding three goals and going down to ten men. However, they staged a very impressive late comeback to break Schalke fans' hearts by scoring two in the last few minutes of the match to win 4-3 on aggregate.

The effort to overturn that deficit seemed to take a toll on Peter Bosz's side, as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to bitter rivals PSV over the weekend. That being said, Ajax have a very formidable home record. They have not lost any of their last 21 games at Amsterdam ArenA across all competiitons, with wins in ten. That includes victories in all six of their Europa League ties at their home ground.

Furthermore, they are also unbeaten in their last four meetings with Lyon, whilst keeping clean sheets in three of those games. In terms of personnel, Nick Viergever and Joel Veltman both miss out due to suspension, but other from that everyone will be available for this tie.

Lyon

Meanwhile, Lyon had to survive a long penalty shoot-out against Besiktas to book their spot at this juncture. Les Gones narrowly defeated Angers at the weekend to rebound after a 2-1 defeat to Monaco in the previous round. With Lyon's womens' team in the finals of the Champions League, it will be interesting to see if Bruno Genesio's side can also make it to the final of European competition.

Of course, they will face a really tough test due to the fact they have yet to beat Ajax in European tournaments. Furthermore, their hosts have won their last six European matches at this ground. Still, Lyon's away record is pretty solid, and they certainly have no problems scoring in their travels. A major concern for the visitors is the fitness of key striker Alexandre Lacazette, who has been struggling with injury and will have to be evaluated prior to this clash.
