An injury-depleted Bayern facing tough task against reigning champs Real Madrid

Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane's side are hoping to become the first team in the modern era to successfully defend their Champions League title. Real Madrid, with 11 titles, are the all-time leading side in this competition, and the last team to win back-to-back titles was AC Milan (albeit that was before the competition was re-formatted in 1991, and when the Rossoneri were still a major force on the global footballing stage). Having won the first leg 2-1, they definitely are in pole position to secure their spot in the quarter-finals, and having won five out of their last six games against Bayern in all comps, it's definitely looking like fully advantage Real ahead of this fixture.

Just as Bayern are pretty strong at home, Real Madrid are equally as formidable. They are unbeaten in their last eight at the Santiago Bernabéu and have lost just one game here all season. Although they will have to make do without key attacker Gareth Bale, as well as defenders Raphael Varane and Pepe, the hosts will be taking on an opponent missing several defenders of their own.

Bayern Munich

In 2014, Real Madrid - then under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti - humiliated Bayern 4-0 at the Allianz Arena. That, to date, is the Bavarian titans' worst-ever home defeat in Europe. Flash-forward nearly three years later and the same Real Madrid was responsible for ending their impressive 16-game winning streak last week. Bayern had taken the advantage through Arturo Vidal, but unfortunately, the Chilean was unable to convert his spot kick to give them a stronger lead, and the Spanish giants, were able to snatch two vital away goals ahead of the second leg.

Unfortunately for the visitors, the loss also cost them the services of Javi Martinez, who sits this one out due to a ban. Mats Hummels  is in doubt which could see David Alaba used as a make-shift center back alongside Jerome Boateng - provided, of course, he can feature as he himself is not fully fit. Like his international colleague Hummels, Boateng is also in doubt for this game and will have to pass a late  fitness test.

Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski, who missed out due to a shoulder injury sustained against his ex-side Dortmund, is expected to make his return. However, the Polish star is still not 100 per cent recovered as his side will be heavily relying on him to make an impact as they hope to overturn their deficit.
