Match Facts & Stats

  • Benfica were the worst-performing side out of the 16 who qualified - they only earned a dismal eight points in the group stage
  • Dortmund have won eight of the 15 UEFA competition ties in which they lost the first leg away from home
  • Since the beginning of last season Dortmund have lost just one of 11 home games (W8 D2) in UEFA competition
  • Die Schwarzgelben have won all five of their previous home matches against Portuguese visitors
  • Dortmund last won this competition in 1997 and are seeking to make it a third QF's appearance since the start of this decade
  • Benfica are hoping to make it to the last eight for third time in six seasons
  • Benfica have lost all nine of their away games against German clubs in the European Cup/Champions League, scoring four goals and conceding 2
  • Only 30% of teams that have lost 1-0 away from home in the first leg of a Champions League knockout game have gone on to qualify (9 out of 30)

Dortmund hoping to make home advantage count

In the first leg, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang missed a spot-kick that ultimately came back to haunt Borussia Dortmund, as Benfica managed to hang on for a slim win. The tie between die Schwarzgelben and their Portuguese opponents ended up being the lowest scoring first leg encounter, as most of the other matches saw at least two goals scored (PSG 4-0 Barcelona; Manchester City 5-3 Monaco, Real Madrid 3-1 Napoli; Bayern 5-1 Arsenal). The only game, in fact that saw under 2.5 goals overall was Juve's 2-0 win over Porto.

With that in mind, this game is still finely poised. However, Thomas Tuchel's men are a very strong side at home, having lost just one out of their last 11 European home ties. In addition, Dortmund have won all five of their past five home European games against Portuguese outfits - a fact that bodes very well for them despite losing the first leg. Furthermore, Benfica barely scraped through to this stage and looked far from convincing in their last European game, despite eventually ending up winning 1-0. Aubameyang netted a brace as Dortmund destroyed Bayer Leverkusen to further extend his lead on top of the goalscorer's charts, and will definitely be looking to make amends for his penalty miss as die Schwarzgelben seek to make it to the quarter-finals.

Marco Reus's injury, however, couldn't come at a worse time. The German international has spent more time out injured than playing over the past few seasons and now is struggling with a hamstring problem. Another absentee will be Mario Gotze due to a health issue, and there is no definite date of return for the 2014 World Cup winner.
