Match Facts & Stats

  • Maurizio Sarri has a bit of a Roma hoodoo - he has never beaten the Giallorossi in five prior attempts as a Serie A manager (two draws, three losses)
  • In fact, Napoli have not scored against Roma at this ground since May 2013
  • That's over 270 minutes of action, and the last goal-scorer was Edinson Cavani
  • The last time Napoli beat Roma at the Stadio Olimpico was in February 2011 (2-0)
  • The goalscorer on that evening was also Edinson Cavani
  • Roma have scored 13 goals in their last four Serie A games at the Stadio Olimpico
  • They've also won their last 15 - a new club record
  • Roma have beaten Napoli in their last four home Serie A games, and the Giallorossi have lost only one of the last 14 (W9, D4)
  • Napoli have conceded goals in nine of their last 10 league games
  • Between the Giallorossi and the Partenopei, they have scored 117 goals (60 for Napoli and 57 for Roma)
  • Napoli & Roma have the best and second best attack in the division after 26 rounds

A massive showdown awaits at the Stadio Olimpico - but can Napoli and Sarri overcome their Roma hoodoo?

Roma

Roma ended up losing their Coppa Italia semi-finals tie first leg to bitter rivals Lazio, but other from that, the Giallorossi are in a slightly better place than their opponents. For starters, they have won their last 15 Serie A games at the Stadio Olimpico. That's a new club record. In addition, they come into this game having beaten another top-five contender - Inter - on the road. Radja Nainggolan was arguably the star of the evening as he scored two beautiful long-range efforts to help the Lupi defeat the Nerazzurri 3-1.

In the reverse fixture, Roma came out on top 3-1 thanks to a brace from Edin Dzeko. The tall Bosnian attacker has had an excellent season so far and is in the running for this season's Capocannoniere alongside Juve's Gonzalo Higuain and Torino's Andrea Belotti. And one should not count out Inter's Mauro Icardi and Napoli's Dries Mertens, who are on 16 goals.

Napoli

As for Napoli, they will be keen on avoiding a third straight defeat across all competitions. Next up for the Partenopei is a must-win tie with Real Madrid in the Champions League, and they will need all the confidence-boost they can get ahead of taking on the reigning champions. Napoli suffered a shock loss to Atalanta last round that now has them very concerned about their grip on third spot; La Dea have moved three points behind and could pull level should they fail to beat Roma later today.

Mertens so far is the team's top marksman, but with natural striker Arkadiusz Milik back in action, it will be very interesting to see how Sarri lines up his attack ahead of this crunch tie. It goes without saying that this is a must-win for Napoli, but Roma will not present an easy foe. For starters, they haven't won this tie in six years, and have not scored here since May 2013. That does not read for promising reading - will Napoli be able to overcome their Roma hoodoo? Or will the Giallorossi make it a 16th straight home win as they aim to consolidate their grip on second place?
