On Sunday, Real Madrid played out a thrilling 3-2 win over Villarreal. The victory was priceless for the league leaders, as it saw them reclaim number one spot from Barcelona after the Blaugrana’s win over Atletico Madrid.
Los Blancos’ triumph wasn’t without scandal. After going 2-0 down, Zidane’s boys fought back, but there was one dubious penalty awarded to the Champions League holders. Cristiano converted from the spot before Morata scored the winning goal.
To make things worse, referee Jesus Gil Manzano left the stadium with a Real Madrid bad and merchandise in hand. Pique publicly slammed the officials, and Villarreal president Fernando Roig questioned the referee’s integrity.
“Gil Manzano and his assistants left the stadium with Real Madrid bags. That’s not right, it seems to me,” Roig said.
Pictures popped up on the Internet of the referee holding the Real Madrid bad whilst speaking to reports, which raised the question: what was in the bag? The Spanish referee’s committee have revealed all.
They claim that the referee was carrying nothing more than promotional items in the bag. They included key-rings, buttons and pens.
Of course, this is nothing new. Les Merengues have given promotional items to referees and the opponents long before. It is a custome that several Spanish clubs perform, including Barcelona.
